Echocatharsis© Term and Meaning

Often – abroad Greece – Gong Therapy Sessions are called “Gong Baths” describing the literal meditative bathing in sound and vibrations. At the beginning, years ago in Greece, when Gong Therapy Sessions were introduced to public, the term Gong Sound Therapy Bath was used as an effort to translate in Greek the meaning of the session. As the study on the gong therapy was developing over time we used then the term “Sound Catharsis” and as more understanding of gong therapy was gained, as the sound of the gong is not the sound of the mallet beating the gong but the resonating sound of the gong developing on its own, the natural echo of the gong, the term Echocatharsis was finally chosen, meaning Catharsis through the Echo, giving the multitude of aspects of Gong Therapy on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.

To understand better the meaning of Catharsis we cite from Wikipedia:

Catharsis (from Greek κάθαρσις katharsis meaning “purification” or “cleansing”) is the purification and purgation of emotions—especially pity and fear—through art or any extreme change in emotion that results in renewal and restoration. It is a metaphor originally used by Aristotle in the Poetics, comparing the effects of tragedy on the mind of spectator to the effect of a cathartic on the body. The term catharsis has also been adopted by modern psychotherapy, particularly Freudian psychoanalysis, to describe the act of expressing, or more accurately, experiencing the deep emotions often associated with events in the individual’s past which had originally been repressed or ignored, and had never been adequately addressed or experienced.

Kάθαρση λαμβάνει χώρα με το ιερό μυστήριο της εξομολογήσεως.Catharsis has also the meaning in religion of the purification of the soul, the cleansing from the sins and guilt that accompanies them. In Christian Religion Catharsis take place at the Holy Mystery of Confession.
